Kronos Performing Arts Association
Janet Cowperthwaite has been a key part of the Kronos Quartet’s extraordinary accomplishments since 1981. A group widely known for redefining the string quartet, Kronos tours internationally, has commissioned more than 1,000 new works, released more than 60 albums, and has won Grammy Awards, the Polar Music Prize, the Avery Fisher Prize, and the WOMEX Artist Award, among others. In 1975 the quartet made the pioneering move to incorporate as a not-for-profit organization and under Janet’s leadership, KPAA has provided the infrastructure necessary to achieve the quartet’s vision while becoming a model for countless arts organizations. For 40 years, and in close collaboration with the quartet, Janet has worked to grow the organization and its staff to oversee all aspects of KPAA, including touring, an annual festival in San Francisco, recordings, commissions, artistic collaborations, project development, education and community programs, fundraising, marketing, and media relations.
Both an innovator and a strategist, Janet is a recognized leader in the field. She has served on several boards, including the Association of Performing Arts Professionals (APAP) and the International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA).
